Article on Charlie Brown in the Burlington Newspaper - May 16, 2004 It’s been said that "disc jockey Charlie Brown was at the beach when they delivered the sand." OK, so maybe it was when the fish arrived. But Brown was around when soul music became what is now known as beach music. He was a disc jockey at WKIX radio in Raleigh from 1964 to 1970, when the sound and the term "beach music" originated. He’s worked with a long list of music’s celebrities, including the Tams, the Embers, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Ray Charles, Sonny and Cher, The Supremes, The Beach Boys, and others. Brown worked with Atlantic Records to produce the first two beach music albums, "Beach Beat Volumes 1 and 2" in 1967-68. "He’s a legend," said Alan Brantley of Burlington’s own Holiday Band. "He’s worked with all the greats. From Dionne Warwick to Jerry Butler. "I betcha he could get Dionne Warwick on the phone right now and she’d know him by his real first name. That’s just the kind of relationship he’s formed with these celebrities." Brantley, who was a teen at the time, used to listen to the "KIX Men of Music In Triangle" during the 1960s. "I remember the first time I heard him on the radio … he gave me chills," Brantley said. "I still get chills when I listen to him now." Brown’s soothing but soulful voice can be heard weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on WPCM (920 AM), introducing "the songs you love from the past five decades." It’s a job he’s had for three years now, following retirement from Entercom, which has stations throughout the country. He served as national sales manager for Greensboro stations like Oldies 93 and 102 Jamz. His "On The Beach" syndicated radio program can be heard on 32 stations throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and on the Internet. WPCM airs the show from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. "I run into so many people that know Charlie Brown," said Chris Beachley, his partner in the syndicated radio show. Beachley operates the Wax Museum in Charlotte, a beach music/oldies record shop, and said that 30 years ago, people would talk about how great Brown’s shows were. So when Beachley’s previous partner, DJ John Hook, left the syndicated beach music show about a year ago, he asked Brown to join. The show is recorded at WPCM and sent to Beachley in Charlotte. DJs in the business call Brown a "first taker." He’s done this for so long that there’s not a lot of rehearsals involved. One take and the radio spot is done. "Charlie’s like Sara Lee … nobody doesn’t like Sara Lee … well nobody does it quite like Charlie," Beachley added. In 1996, Brown was inducted into the Cammy Beach Music Hall of Fame for his involvement in the beach music industry. But don’t think for a minute that all this success has gone to his head. Musicians and DJs alike will tell you that "I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t like the man." Some of it is his persona — that smooth, husky-sounding voice doesn’t quite fit the man — who looks like a big, cuddly teddy bear. He’s one of those guys who’s never met a stranger and is the first to strike up a conversation, whether it’s about music, entertainment, or his other loves — his daughter and two grandsons. "He knows how to work with people," Brantley said. "Whether that’s playing songs you request or just talking to you." The weekly show on WPCM is light, fun and happy and includes more than a DJ playing hits. He talks about entertainment events in and around the area and the latest movies with me, at 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday on the air. This time of year, we discuss the "American Idol" results. But it’s his beach music knowledge that sets this DJ apart. Give Brown a band and he can tell you the hits they’ve had and when. Keevin Smith, guitarist with The Attractions band, believes that Brown has taken this music "to a whole new level." "He’s lived the music as a young man," Smith said. "And because of people like him, this music will outlive us all." Smith laughed when he said, "everyone knows him but few know his real name or how he got the nickname Charlie Brown." Close friends and family, including wife Sue, call the Norfolk, Va., native by his real name, Ed Weiss. The on-air name "Charlie Brown" was given to him in 1959 during his first parttime radio job (he was still in high school). "The song was on the radio … and I think the Peanuts cartoon was popular then, too," he said. "They just gave it to me." It stuck. The legendary stories came later, during his stint at WKIX radio. There’s the time he took Keith Richards and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones to Kentucky Fried Chicken on Hillsborough Street for lunch. That’s right. The Stones weren’t as popular then (in 1966). That same day, the Stones (except for Mick Jagger and Bill Wyman) were in Brown’s home, going through old 45s. He never thought to take a picture or get an autograph; after all, these were musical upstarts at the time. Then there’s the time he met Elvis Presley at a country show in 1957 and the late great Buddy Holly, too, in 1958. Brown was still in high school at the time. He could go on and on … but Brown is too modest for bragging. The Hillsborough resident is "semi-retired," but folks at WPCM are certainly glad that he’s decided to spend that retirement here. Gailes Stuckey, the station’s general sales manager, considers him "an asset to this station." Listeners from Florida to Philadelphia email Brown with compliments on the play list. He said he’s just happy to play the music that "I loved listening to." Charity Apple is assistant Accent editor and Here & Now adviser. She’s on the air with Charlie Brown on WPCM (920 AM) each Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. You can call Charlie at 584-0126 or by e-mail at wpcm@triad.rr.com.
